Day 24: Presentation Skills Expanded

Lesson Objectives

• Review basic concepts to effective speaking skills
• Identify weaknesses in academic presentations with PowerPoint
• Analyze our language via debate viewing
• Sign-Up for end-of-semester conferences and presentations.

Warm Up: Debate discussion [2:00-2:10 (10min)]
Hold small group and then class discussion on the following questions:

1. Do you think debate skills are useful/transferable to academic presentation skills? Why or why not?
2. Was there anything that surprised you with regard to the debate performance? 
3. What did you find to be the most difficult task to accomplish in the debate? 
4. If you could do it all over again, would you change something about your team's approach? What? 

Part I: The Ten Commandments [2:10-2:25 (15min)]

Please click HERE to access a document that we will discuss in small groups and then as a class. Please note that the language is not only "sarcastic", but also written in older English. Listen first as a I explain these concepts before you read the text in groups. 

Part II: Power Point Skills [2:25-2:45 (20min)]
In groups of three, open HERE to access a basic rubric and questions to consider when evaluating/making a power-point presentation. Use this information as a guide to evaluating the following powerpoint presentations. Rank each powerpoint by giving them a grade of A, B, C, D or F.

Part V: Presentation Assignment+ Sign-Up  [3:00-3:20 (20min)]

In this last part of today's class, we will draw numbers to decide in what order students will present. After your number is drawn, you will be asked to select a time slot from the following google doc:

Please think ahead! If your "preferred" spot is taken, what is the second best option for you!

Part VI: Clarification of course assignments/dates/points/expectations

I would like to reiterate the assignments/expectations of the remaining assignments of our course. Also,  This is your opportunity to ask questions for clarification. .

Homework: 

Five sources + Outline of Argumentative paper are due on 11/19 via dropbox. Read directions under "Major Course Assignments" First drafts are due on November 27th. Please bring three hard copies to class for peer review.
